Thankful for the Mission

Hershey’s claims to be the sweetest place on earth and their mission statement is to be a leader in the hospitality and entertainment industries by delivering excellence to their guests and employees, while enhancing their relationships with the Hershey entities and the community and sustaining financial integrity.  Microsoft’s well-known mission statement is to enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize their full potential.

The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, known as the country’s mission statement, instills a sense of purpose, wonder and peace:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America

Does your organization have a mission statement, vision and core values?

Many companies do not have them but they want to consistently grow and satisfy stakeholders.  A mission statement is nothing more than a brief statement of the purpose of your company or organization.  It should be a written statement that clearly explains the company’s responsibilities, overall goal, direction and maybe the offered products and services.  It should be a guide for the actions of all levels of your organization.

Even if you have a well-defined vision and mission statement you may be wondering why nothing has changed.   The exercise of developing them is a waste of time and talent if they are used only for the annual report or a display in the reception area.  If you want to energize your employees to work toward corporate mission, vision and core values they must be lived by and constantly communicated by all the executives.  Once your employees understand where the company is going and what you are trying to achieve, you should soon see a strategic alignment.

Core values usually include words such as team, respect, excellence, customer value, communication, positive change, high expectations, trustworthy, honesty, commitment and quality.  Core values are generally an expression of what attributes are important to your company.
