As a business owner, you know the struggles to hiring and sustaining great employees. It can seem like a never ending battle to keep good staff members on the payroll. When you go to hire on new people to complete your team, keep these things in mind.
Look For Employees That Will Compliment Your Own Skills
You do not need to hire on carbon copies of yourself. That is a great way to limit your business. Instead, look for individuals that can bring something to the table that you lack. You want people that are experienced in areas that you are not.
Make The Right Job Description
Often times, when we are trying to fill a position, we try to fill the same rolls of the person that left. Here’s the problem with that, the job description may be out of date.
Before you put out a want ad, you need to determine exactly what you are looking for in the next employee. Look at the flow of the company, identify the problems, and then write a new job description based on that.
Once you have a good job description together, then you can look for a person that possesses the experience you need.
Value and Recognize Model Employees
It is very important that you come up with a way of acknowledging and rewarding employees that are doing a good job and not necessarily based off of time they have worked for you. Not to say that you shouldn’t give any consideration to time in the company, but that should not be the sole litmus test for rewarding employees.
You need to have regular staff evaluations in order to determine who needs to be rewarded or set apart. Without these evals, then it will be hard to know who is performing well or not.
Feedback, Feedback, Feedback
Feedback is a critical part of getting and keeping good employees. This is a two way street. You need to give them feedback about their performance during reviews. Just as importantly, however, you need to accept feedback from the employees.
Invest in a process that will allow you to gain feedback from your employees. You need to know what problems they are facing as well as ideas they have to make things run more smoothly.
The people on your team want to know that what they have to say is valuable. Individuals that are rewarded for a job well done will continue to work harder and spur on other employees. Investing in your staff is very important to the running a successful business.
